Fracture House

On a site composed of two overlapping parcels — a rectangular front lot and a square retreat at the rear — Fracture House is conceived as both street presence and private sanctuary. From the public side it conceals more than it reveals, while the rear garden, pool, and poolhouse unfold as a secluded landscape.Large angled masses define the upper floor, protective and sculptural in character. Set above a transparent glass base, they appear to hover, their weight countered by the openness below. A narrow slit of courtyard cuts through both levels, dividing the master suite from the children’s bedrooms above while separating living from dining below. This incision organizes the plan while pulling daylight and planting deep into the interior.

The entry sequence is processional, guided by a concrete wall that aligns outside and in, leading directly to the home’s vertical circulation. From there, the house opens into expansive communal rooms — dining, kitchen, and living — arranged as a series of connected volumes. Though partially open in plan, it is their generous scale that creates a sense of flow and calm, each space oriented toward the central garden. South light animates the courtyard notch, making it a focal point for the daily life of the house.

The upper floor is reserved for family life: three secondary bedrooms cluster together, while the master suite remains nearby yet distinctly private. At the rear, the square portion of the site becomes a place apart — a secluded landscape by Paul Sangha with pool and poolhouse, reached by a narrow path. Its identity lies in fracture: sculpted volumes above, a slit of light and garden within.
